What is Legal Heir Certificate?
Legal Heir certificate is required when a Family Member is suddenly demised and if you required to transfer the assets to a new person in the Family.
Below are the Persons who will be considered as Legal Heirs in the Family:

- Children of the deceased (Son/ Daughter)
- Parents of the deceased
- Sibling of the deceased

To apply for Legal Heir Certificate, First visit the following TNeGA official Portal: TNeGA Login
Once you visit the above link, you will be able to see below login page where you have to log in with your details

Once you login to your account in the portal, you will see the following page where you should choose the “Revenue Department”.
Choose the “Legal Heir Certificate” from the Revenue Department Services as per the below image.
Service Description
If the head or a member of the family expires, the next direct legal heir of the deceased such as the wife or husband or son or daughter or mother may apply for legal-heirship certificate.
The application for the purpose of transferring Electricity connection, House Tax, Telephone connection/patta transfer, Bank Account, etc.
If the person who died is a Government servant, a legal heir certificate is issued for sanction of family pension, to get an appointment on compassionate grounds.
Supporting Documents
The following are the Supporting Documents required for applying the Legal Heir Certificate.
- Address of the deceased where he ordinarily resided before death (anyone from the below document list)
- Divorce Copy
- Death Certificate of First Wife
- Evidence for second marriage
- Self-Declaration of the spouse indicating all other legal heirs (including Mother in law)
- Marriage Registration Certificate or Passport or Voter ID or Aadhaar Cards or NPR data to establish a relationship
- Birth Certificate of all the children or T.C of all the children
- Death Certificate of the deceased
- Death Certificate of both the parents
- Birth Certificate or Community Certificate or Passport or Aadhaar (all eligible heirs) or TC or NPR or Employee Service Board
- Birth Certificate or TC or NPR or Employee Service Record or Community Certificate or Passport or Voter ID or Aadhaar of all eligible heirs
- Guardianship order issued by Hon’ble Civil court to prove relationship to the heirs
- Self-declaration of the parents
- Self-Declaration of Applicant
- Document Proof for Legally Adoption
Application Form
Once you select the Certificate, you could see the following procedures which are required to apply for the certificate.
After you read the instructions, click on proceed to move for CAN selection page
Search the CAN number using Mobile Number/Email-ID or through Name and select your Exact CAN number.
Once you found the CAN, you can verify it with your Mobile Number with OTP and proceed for the Application page.
In the application form, your address details will be filled automatically using the CAN details, only the following page need to be filled.

Legal Heir Details form will look like below where the details of Heir should be entered with the required details.
Whether there are any Legally Adopted Heirs | Select Yes/No from the Option |
Name | Enter the Name of the Legal Heir Details |
Age | Age Details of the person |
Relationship to the Deceased | Select the Relationship of the person |
Marital Status | Marital Status of the Legal Heir |
Living Status | Select whether Alive or Dead |
“Add” Button | If you want to add another person, select add and fill the details |
“Submit” Button | Select the Submit Button to proceed for the next page |
“Cancel” Button | Select Cancel if you required to cancel the same |
Once you fill all the above details, click on submit to proceed for the payment of Fees Rs.60.
Once you pay the fees, download the Acknowledgement form, and use it for your reference and tracking.
